last night on the way home from a long day I was listening to Market Place on our local Public Radio Station – WVXU. In the back of my mind were the recent debates and blackouts regarding the idiocy of SOPA/PIPA.
Bob Moon was talking about the Kodak Bankruptcy and I thought that I heard something related to the problem the MPAA just might have.
In the course of the conversation Bob quotes Austin Smith (The Motley Fool) with:
Kodak failed to leverage its own innovation in the digital camera, because executives feared it would kill their cash-cow film business.
Now I do not know what the MPAA or the RIAA could do to adjust to these changing times but I think it would be, ultimately, in their best interest to discover whatever “that” is. They need to look beyond what their current ‘cash cow business is’. Get over it.
Like the newspaper and eventually the magazine they will need to change. We cannot protect them forever. In fact protecting just might be contrary to the growth and development of our future. Look at all the industries that have been left in the ruble over the last 500 years. Some did not go down easy.
Think about this; If it wasn’t for Kodak there might not even be a movie industry. Kodak is in bankruptcy when will that happen to the movie industry?
Kodak and the movie industry may be different stories but both are being changed by advances in digital technologies and soon it will be too late for the movie industry – at least as we know it.
There is more to the story and you should either read it or listen to it here – Kodak Files for Bankruptcy. Short but very interesting and, in my case, thought provoking. There are some other interesting quotes.
Isn’t technology great?
Funny, I never saw a movie theater in Star Trek.
Oh yes, I would have linked to The Motley Fool however they wanted me to spend way too much time giving email addresses and answering questions. Hmmm.. I wonder if they are part of a Government agency?
